One thing that we get right here on the Outer Banks are playgrounds. From Corolla to Rodanthe, there are some awesome, FREE town playgrounds with super cool features that kids of all ages can enjoy. Here is a full list of Outer Banks playgrounds, from north to south. We visit these a LOT and can definitely say that they’re all fun, different, and any of them are worth a visit! I’m including some pros and cons, tips and tricks for each one so you can choose the OBX playground that works best for your family.
Corolla Playgrounds
corolla town playground
There is one playground in Corolla, and it is awesome. It’s also the newest option around. This is a large playground with a ton of features. It’s located in the Historic Corolla Park, so you’re super close (walking distance) to the Currituck Lighthouse, Whalehead Club and Maritime Museum, and not far from the village. The park is custom-designed with a waterfowl theme (seriously, so cool…) and has some fun, really different things to play on. It also had the fastest slide my kids had ever been on. There is also a covered picnic shelter adjacent to the playground.
Bathroom Situation: Indoor bathrooms are located in the Historic Corolla Park, a short walk from the playground
Shade Situation: There isn’t any shade on the playground itself, but the picnic shelter area adjacent to it is covered.
Bottom Line: You could definitely spend a pretty good amount of time here, so plan accordingly! Or build a stop here into your day trip to Corolla Historic Park.
duck Playgrounds
Duck town playground
This is a small but nice little playground right on the main road in Duck. It’s got a play/climbing structure with slides, a rock climbing wall and some fun monkey bar-type features. If you’re spending time in Duck, this is a great quick stop close to the town green, boardwalk, and amphitheater!
Bathroom Situation: There are bathrooms located at the adjacent town green area.
Shade Situation: Pretty shady, nestled in the trees.
Bottom Line: This is a small playground, but it’s nice and worth a stop if you’re close by!
kitty hawk Playgrounds
David paul Pruitt park
This park, located at the northern end of Woods Road, is one of the smaller Outer Banks playgrounds, but still has some fun features. There is one structure geared towards younger toddlers, and one larger one with some climbing features and a taller slide. There are also several swings.
Bathroom Situation: No bathroom, just a port-a-potty
Shade Situation: The playground structures themselves aren’t shady, but there are some trees and two picnic tables that get some shade, depending on the time of day. This one can be hot because it’s more sheltered from wind – it’s actually one of our top picks to visit in the winter!
Bottom Line: If you’re close by, this playground is worth a stop, but I wouldn’t go far out of my way to get there, simply because it’s on the smaller side.
kill devil hills Playgrounds
hayman park
Hayman Park is in high rotation in our house- my kids love this one and ask to go all the time. It has swings, including a cool big/little swing that you can ride with a young child (or put 2 or 3 small kids on there together!), some ride-on bouncy animals, and a play structure with slides and a fun, unique musical feature. The big plus for this playground is that it has a big, grassy field for tag, frisbee or just running around, and is surrounded by live oaks so there’s some great shade and nice low trees to climb. We love bringing snacks and having a picnic in the trees- there are a couple shady picnic tables as well.
Bathroom Situation: No bathroom
Shade Situation: Plenty of shade around the perimeter of the playground
Bottom Line: This Kill Devil Hills playground isn’t huge, but is a good size and has some fun features and keeps my kids occupied for a good while. Great option if you have different aged kids who may want to toss a football or baseball while younger siblings play on the structures.
meekins park
If you’re in the Kitty Hawk, Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills area, I would definitely recommend hitting up Meekins Park. Located pretty centrally near Target and the movie theater, this OBX park has a little bit of everything. In summer there is a splash pad (new in 2023) that is a huge hit for toddlers and young kids. There is also a large play set with some pretty tall twisty slides and great climbing obstacles, as well as a smaller play structure for younger toddlers. There is a very cool rope-climbing-pyramid-type thing – a little hard to describe, but awesome if you have an older child who is a climber! Finally, this is adjacent to a couple of soccer fields that are open for running, frisbee, football, you name it (as long as soccer or lacrosse practice isn’t happening!). There are covered picnic areas, swing sets and tennis courts as well.
Bathroom Situation: Inside bathroom
Shade Situation: There is a large shaded picnic area, and some shade structures around the splash pad but the main playground is uncovered.
Bottom Line: This Kill Devil Hills playground is awesome, and worth a visit for the splash pad alone.
rec park
Rec Park (aka Dare County Parks and Recreation Family Center) is a large facility with a great playground, sports fields, a large covered picnic area and tennis courts. The playground has a good variety of structures for kids of different ages, including one that’s pretty tall for older kids, and a smaller ‘pirate ship’ with a curly slide for younger kids (this is brand new and as of Spring ’25 is currently being installed). This park has lots of benches and picnic tables, and there are quite a few live oaks around- good for climbing and also gives some decent shade. This park is one of the less-hot options in the summer (still warm, but usually you can feel a breeze here and the shade helps!).
Bathroom Situation: Indoor bathrooms
Shade Situation: Pretty good shade from the live oaks, plus a large covered picnic pavilion
Bottom Line: Rec Park is a good, large playground with a variety of options. It’s fairly shady and convenient, and we hit it up pretty often. One note- if you are here during the school year, this is adjacent to an elementary school so it tends to get crowded when school lets out in the afternoons!
nags head Playgrounds
nags head town park
This is a pretty hidden playground back off of Barnes Street. It’s a bit more of a niche spot, with just one large climbing structure, but the structure is VERY cool. It’s geared towards slightly older kids- I’d say at least 3-4 years and older, but if you have an active kid who is into climbing, ninja courses or obstacles, this is a spot for you. It’s nestled back in the woods, so it’s more shady than the other playgrounds, and has a large field and covered picnic area. It also shares a parking lot with a great Nags Head woods hiking trail that takes you back to the sound.
Bathroom Situation: Indoor bathrooms
Shade Situation: One of the most shady playgrounds around!
Bottom Line: This is a great, quick stop if you have a super active kid who is into climbing and obstacle courses, but not so much for the younger ones.
dowdy park
Dowdy Park is a very cool Nags Head playground with a ton of different features. Located on the site of the former Dowdy Amusement Park, it was purchased by the town and turned into an amazing facility. It has tons of play structures, a sand dig area, unique slides and swings, music features, a large grassy field, basketball courts, and is surrounded by a path that’s great for scooters or small bikes. Dowdy Park is well kept, landscaped, and has a nice bathroom. In the summer, there is a great farmers market here on Thursday mornings, free weekly yoga and live music, so plan accordingly! Check the website for details. There are a few shady areas and tables, but this one is more open and sunny than some others.
Bathroom Situation: Indoor bathrooms
Shade Situation: Only a little bit of shade over a few tables, this one tends to be warm in the hotter months
Bottom Line: Dowdy Park has a lot to do and is a great facility. Aside from being a touch hot in mid-summer, I highly recommend a stop here! The farmers markets and other events are also worth a check if you’re nearby as well. Like Rec Park, Dowdy is adjacent to Nags Head Elementary so during school months the after-school hours are pretty busy.
Whalebone park
Located just across the street from Jennette’s Pier, Whalebone Park is a great spot with a ship-themed play structure. Throw in some climbing features, swings, bouncy ride-on dolphins and covered picnic tables, you’ve got a great playground where you can hang for a while! Bonus- you can walk to Dune Burger for some fries and a burger or hot dog, or Fat Boyz for ice cream after you play.
Bathroom Situation: Port a potty
Shade Situation: The picnic tables have shade sails in the summer. The location of this playground helps with the heat- there’s usually a pretty good cross breeze here so it’s not terribly hot.
Bottom Line: Whalebone Park is a favorite in our household – the ship structure is great for playing Pirates, and there’s a good amount of space to run around.
manteo Playgrounds
manteo Waterfront Playground
This is a great playground right on the water in Downtown Manteo. It was recently fenced, so it feels safe even though it’s adjacent to the boardwalk and Marshes Lighthouse. There’s a large play structure, swings, and diggers so little construction fans can scoop to their hearts’ content. This is a great playground to get some energy out with a good variety of options. If you spend a day in Manteo, definitely plan to stretch your kids’ legs here for a bit!
Bathroom Situation: There are public restrooms a couple blocks away, but none right here.
Shade Situation: There are some trees so depending on the time of day you may get a touch of shade. Being right on the water does help it not be super hot.
Bottom Line: This is a fun playground in a great location! You won’t spend hours here, but you can definitely make it a good pit stop to let out some energy.
Old swimming hole playground
This playground is located just past the Aquarium on Airport Road. It has some fun play structures, but is on the smaller side. It’s super convenient if you hit the aquarium and want to stretch your legs afterwards though, and also has a sandy sound beach access and a large picnic pavilion. Bonus- it’s right next to the Manteo Airport, so airplane-lovers will be able to watch small planes take off and land! (Alternately, noise-sensitive kids may want to sit this one out).
Bathroom Situation: Indoor bathrooms
Shade Situation: The playground itself doesn’t have any shade, aside from the covered picnic area.
Bottom Line: A good spot to stop before or after a trip to the Aquarium, and great for airplane fans!
rodanthe Playgrounds
rodanthe community center playground
This is a VERY cool playground.Themed like a pirate ship, the main play structure is BIG, and there are swings and other features as well, including a smaller ship and a “mountain” to climb. There is a covered picnic area and it is adjacent to the Rodanthe skate park. Definitely worth a stop if you’re staying in the area, or heading south towards Hatteras for the day!
Bathroom Situation: Port a potty
Shade Situation: The playground itself doesn’t have any shade, aside from the covered picnic area.
Bottom Line: This playground is definitely worth hitting up if you’re anywhere near the area, or feel like taking a drive to check out a different part of the OBX. It’s a super unique spot with a lot to play on!

I may be biased, but the Outer Banks has an abnormally large amount of really great playgrounds and parks from Corolla to Rodanthe. There’s definitely something for all ages and bound to be an OBX playground convenient to where you’re located!
